Issue #25

The Shard*low Get Together – August 23-25, 2003 – U.K.

At the Get Together next year it is proposed to display several family charts (trees) and invite visitors to add information to them, in line with the policy of confidentially NO names or dates more recent than 1900 will be displayed but if you have any objection to the use of any other data you have provided please let me know.

Comment
Having reached number 25 is, I suppose, something of a milestone. The earlier issues were not published quarterly but as and when information of interest came to hand and the circulation was only 7 people! The first dated issue was No.8 in October 1998 and consisted mainly of items I had been able to dig up, since then material sent in by members has gradually increased including photographs. There is always room for more so keep them coming.

For some reason there was a ‘glitch’ in sending No. 24 and several were returned to me because the address had not been recognized, some of these were due to members having changed their ISP and although the new address had been entered in my mail programme it had not deleted the old one. John Shardalow, who puts Shards on this website, notifies everyone when a new edition appears, would it be acceptable to leave members to read it there instead of sending to them by email?

Cliff Shardalow has reminded me of the web site www.rootsweb.com which is making the GRO Indexes of births, deaths & marriages available on the Internet, I had visited this site some time ago but I was pleased to see it had been expanded considerably. It is searchable on line but should be used with caution because, like all transcriptions, it is open to errors and is still far from complete. Some years of the index have been almost completely covered while others have hardly been started, so if the event you are looking for is not found it does not mean it does not exist. Before starting a search I would advise clicking on the Information button, scrolling down to Statistics and then clicking on Database Coverage. This will bring up charts showing the coverage for each year and each type of event.

Co-operation
a photograph of a plaque in the Anglican Church in Knysna, S.A.Catherine (wife of John Shardlow) writing from South Africa has sent me a photograph of a plaque in the Anglican Church in Knysna, S.A. This includes the name of Edward John SHARDALOW who I have only recently (SHARDS 23) been able to connect with the Shardalow family of Norton Subcourse, Norfolk. Catherine’s husband is descended from the Shardlow family of Markfield, Leicestershire. [Also see item in Sports Section’.] (Click on picture to see an enlargement)

New Contacts
It may be wondered why I have not welcomed Catherine (above) as a new contact, she now receives the newsletter on behalf of Mrs. Mary Shardlow who joined us earlier but does not have E-mail. Apologies and thanks Catherine! Sadly I have to report that Mary’s husband Alfred, died recently after a long illness.

I am pleased to say Alan & Lesley Shardlow in Scotland to whom I wrote to some time ago have now become part of the Group.

As there are a large number of Shardalows in Derbyshire I have joined the Family History Society for that county and have had three contacts as a result, unfortunately one of these does not wish to join our group. Heather Eaton seems to be from the same family as Tony Shardlow and, with their agreement, I have put them in touch with each other.

Keith Hames, whose paternal G.grandmother was Ann Elizabeth Shardlow, has sent me a very detailed chart showing where she fits into his family. Ann was born in 1863 at Brimmington, Derbyshire, the daughter of John and Rebecca.

Pauline Miles posted her interest in the name Shardlow in the Leicester & Rutland FHS Journal, she was already in contact with Keith Parks, another recent recruit, and seems to be connected with two others. Keith is sending me some data he has which may help to bridge a gap in the Sharde/alow family in East Anglia.

Sports Section
I also have to thank Catherine for telling me that her husband, John, and his brother, Peter, who took the photo of the plaque, are both hockey players. John played for the South West Africa side as well as at provincial level for Western Cape while Peter played for Eastern Cape, in one provincial tournament they were playing against each other.

I have to apologise for a typing error in SHARDS #24

This was not detected earlier because in the 1881 Census she was listed as aged 52 when in fact she was only 32, living in the home of Mr. W. Clabburn as companion to his daughter.

1901 Census on line
Everyone must have heard, or experienced, the fiasco when this was launched in January this year. It is now available Monday – Saturday (not Sunday) I have been able to print a considerable quantity of information by simply keying in the surname but it is rather fussy about the number of persons it will extract at one time. For example I was able to call up all the Shardalows (10) nationwide in one go and the same with Shardelows (11), when I tried to do the same with Shardlow the program asked me to modify my search because of the large number of results. I tried entering a county (Derbyshire) but it will only accept that if you also specify Male or Female, when I asked for these separately it returned 16 males and 22 females.

Strangely the program would not recognize Nottinghamshire but was quite happy with Nottingham where there were 48 males and 40 females, as these selections are based on the place of birth I think these only refer to people born in the city of Nottingham as opposed to other places in the county. This is borne out by the fact those extracted for Derbyshire include people from other parts of the county.

when I referred to Richard Shardelow, this should of course have been Richard SHARDLOW. Apologies to Richard.

Help wanted
Unknown ShardlowKay Healy mentioned in ‘New Contacts’ in the last issue as Kay. Has Benjamin Shardlow and his wife Ann nee Wright sent me a photo of her G. G. grandfather Benjamin Shardlow and his wife Ann nee Wright and one of an ‘unknown’ Shardlow both of which I will attach as a JPG file. As the ‘unknown’ photo is a commercial one taken at a studio in Victoria, Australia I wonder if the records of this firm have been deposited with a Record Office, Marj Cowie lives in Victoria and, although she is very busy with family matters she has started to explore this possibility. (click for larger pictures)

Meanwhile I have managed to identify the Clara Shardalow whose picture was attached to SHARDS #23. She was a daughter of Benjamin Shardelow and his wife Mary whose maiden name was Blunderfield. The children of Mary’s brothers would call her “Aunt” although this was only by marriage.

So far I have printed out the following data, given name & surname, age, where born, where living at time of census & occupation (not always given.)

Shardalow Nationwide (irrespective of where born)
Shardelow Nationwide (irrespective of where born)
Shardlow Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Staffordshire, Nottingham (City only)

All the above is in alphabetical order by first name i.e. NOT in family groups, and is available free of charge at ukcensusonline.com. If you wish to see the occupants of each household separately there is a charge, payable on line by credit card or by prepaid vouchers which can be purchased from most family history societies.

My conclusion is that this a very useful facility for finding individual families but does require a little manipulation for the block extraction of one surname.
