    • Census: 1871, Hemsby, Norfolk, UK; 1871 Census: Annie and John staying with grandfather and 3 aunts, visiting from Thorpe. Hemsby is 17 miles north of Thorpe next Haddiscoe.
    • Departure: 20 Apr 1882 - 14 May 1882, Liverpool to Quebec; Sailed on the Dominion Line SS Mississippi. Apparently under the custody of a Reverend and with many young boys. It seems he was a 'Home Child'. Aged 14 (he would actually have been 15). He is listed as Edd with the 2nd "d" raised. I think the record indicates that he was destined for the National Childrens Home (charity) in Hamilton, Ontario 42 miles from Toronto. Albert George Shardalow also went to that Home in the same year and also crossed the atlantic in April. In 1873 the charity set up an emigration scheme and the home in Hamilton. The charity had been set up by Methodist Minister Thomas Bowman Stephenson - I think his name is on the passenger list as the Reverend accompanying the children across the atlantic.

    • Miscellaneous as specified: 13 Jun 1894, Chilliwack/New Westminster, Vancouver, Canada; A Shardelow is reported to be a witness at the attempted destruction of a dam or 'jamb'. The Chilliwack Progress.
    • Miscellaneous as specified: 14 Apr 1897, Chilliwack/New Westminster, Vancouver, Canada; The Chilliwack Progress reports Mr. J. Shardelow is gradually recovering the use of his foot and its hoped he will soon be able to dispense with his crutches.
    • Departure: May 1900, New York to Liverpool; Travels on RMS Invernia arriving in Liverpool 5 June 1900. Travels 'steerage' along with 722 others.
    • Departure: 9 Feb 1901, Liverpool to Portland, Maine, USA; "E J Shardelow" is on the passenger list. Returned to North America on the SS Cambroman, from Liverpool to Portland, USA. Travels Second Saloon (would have cost about $40 I think; about $1200 today - 2021).

    • Residence: 31 Mar 1901, Chilliwack/New Westminster, Vancouver, Canada; 1901 Census records John as 1 of 5 servants to the Allen Evans family. And his condition as "U White" (unmarried), profession farm labourer, emigrated in 1886.

    • Residence: 1911, Nelson, British Columbia, Canada; 1911 Canada Census. John, wife Emma and daughter Mary are living at 1204 Walter Street, Nelson, Canada. He is a Railway Inspector. It says he emigrated in 1886.
