Issue #23

Comment
After a somewhat frustrating start the first three months of 2002 have turned out to be some of the most rewarding since the study of this name was started.

Tony Shardlow, while on a business trip to South Africa, found time to visit Tom Shardelow the Olympic Cyclist mentioned in SHARDS #22 with the result that I now have a whole new family to add to the database. This was followed by finding a GRO Index Reference I have been seeking for more than two years. Coincidentally this was for the marriage of the person who first took Tom Shardelow's family to SA. Having got the copy certificate I can link Thomas Samuel Shardalow with the family of John Shardelow and Mary neé Smyth. This will be of interest to Marj. Cowie and both John and Cliff Shardalow .

The third, and for me the most notable event was, thanks to the co-operation of Cliff Shardalow and Tony Shardlow, being able to launch a DNA test to establish the degree of relationship between the two main variations of the name. The families of both Cliff and Tony have been quite separate for at least 300 years and probably much longer yet both have the same unusual factor in their DNA Profile. In spite of this the laboratory's opinion is that they come from different origins but had a common ancestor about 2000 years ago.

Being based on only two samples this is far from conclusive and it has to be decided if any more test are possible.

Sports Section
Including this in the last issue was a little " tongue in cheek" but I must add a little more detail. Tony Shardlow modestly declines to give me full details but both he and his son Richard have represented their county at cycling and says that "national records have been involved". Richard is obviously an all round athlete taking part in several sports and is now in training for the "Ironman Triathlon" (swimming, cycling and running) to be held in Lanzarote in May. I am sure we all wish him every success.

Good Samaritan
A little late in reaching me but worthy of note just the same. In Nov. 2000 Paul Shardelow's son Geoff, who was then a paper delivery boy, noticed one of his customers lying unconscious on the floor. Prompt use of his mobile phone to call 999 saved the lady's life.

It is items like this and the Sports Section which turns a collection of names and dates into a real family history but which are so difficult to find in years to come. We should all make sure they are recorded where they can not be missed by future family historians.

"Update".
Records available on line came up with several new names due to "Boyd's Marriage Index (1538-1837) East Anglia" having been added.

These included some which have appeared on earlier newsletters so I have removed those but the list below may include some which are on the IGI. All the following are marriages so I have omitted this to save space.

(The double entry for Martha & Ric(hard) obviously refers to the same couple having a ceremony in two parishes, not unusual at that time although the two villages are not far apart]

Family Gathering
Tony Shardlow has suggested we might consider having a “get-together” sometime in the future. Many One-Name Societies and Study Groups do hold very successful meetings of this sort which are often attended by members from abroad but, as a group, we are probably unusual in the small number of members and the percentage of them who live outside the UK. Out of 33 people who receive the newsletter only 12 live in GB.but naturally we would hope anyone attending would bring their family.

Such meetings are usually held at or near the place where the name is thought to have originated which would make the village of Shardlow an obvious choice, it also has the advantage of being fairly central, near Derby and Nottingham, and close to two Motorways.

I would be pleased to have all members views on this suggestion and whether, provided plenty of notice is given, they would be likely to attend.

Help Wanted
Allan Dobney has sent me some photographs of the Shardalow family of Thorpe next Haddiscoe which, as usual, I am attaching as a separate file. Allan's wife, Jane, is descended from Emma Ann in the group of six. Jane does not know (and I have not been able to help) where Clara Shardalow fits in. The caption, partly cut off, reads "Alfred Blunderfield's aunt" but we do not know if she was a Shardalow by birth or by marriage. Any help would be appreciated.

New Contact
Lyndsey Shardlow has asked for help in tracing her Great grandfather Albert William Shardlow thought to have been born June 1898. This date is calculated from his stated age when he died but searches in the GRO index up the Dec. Qtr. have failed to find him. There is a possibility he was registered under another name and later took the name Shardlow but I feel sure there some reason for this choice.
