IIn the last Newsletter I suggested that, in lieu of a Shard*low gathering,  members might wish to attend the “Flight of Yesterdays” conference being organized by The Federation of Family History Societies.  This is being held at Loughborough University which is quite close to the village of Shardlow where the surname originated and a Shard*low Meeting might be arranged during the conference.  My domestic situation has now changed, I shall be attending the conference and would be pleased to hear from anyone who will be there. If you are not staying for the whole program (5 days) please indicate which day or days you will be attending. The program of the conference and a booking form can be found at www.flightofyesterdays.org.uk (This site is no longer online)

Shardlowe surname
Heater Eaton has sent me a copy of a document dated 1589 in which this spelling is used several times although on one occasion it is spelled with a central “E”.  This is in a legal document relating to the transfer of property and the first case I have come across of both forms being used to refer to same person. Heather also pointed out entries in the Repton, Derbyshire, Parish Register between 1590 and 1638 for SHARDLY, SHARDELY, SHARDLOUE and SHARDLOE, I had not previously regarded these as variants of Shardlow but further investigation indicates that I should.

 Wills online
The National Archives web site at https://www.findmypast.co.uk/ is a very useful source of information. This web site allows a surname search which brings up a list of items in which that word occurs but it should be noted that if, like Shardlow, it is also a place name these will also be listed. Individual items can be downloaded at a cost of £3 per item. I got the wills of Robert Shardlowe, Glasier of London, 1608, Anthony Shardelow of Thelveton, Norfolk, 1655 and William Shardlow, merchant of London.1705.

I have to thank Heather Eaton for her help in reading the latter, unfortunately William did not leave any male heirs so that Shardlow line ends there but one of his two daughters married John Wightman and christened one of their seven children Shardlow Wightman.  William seems to have been a member of The Society of Friends (Quakers) because he also left one hundred pounds to be loaned, free of interest, to poor young Quakers to help them get started in business. The will of Robert Shardlowe points to a possible connection with Derbyshire, it mentions the sum of fifteen pounds owed to him by “ Christopher Condytt of the Towne of Darbie”. There is no indication of Robert’s age but it makes it clear his son, also called Robert, is under twenty one so it is reasonable to assume that Robert senior was not an old man.  The Derbyshire I.G.I does not contain any Roberts but this is not surprising given the early date.

Anthony Shardelow was one of the family on the Norfolk/ Suffolk border descended from Sir John Shardelow who was a judge in the 1300 and whose descendants were active in the law for at least three generations.

Keeping the name going
Congratulations to Mark & Sarah Foyster on the birth of twin daughters Megan Alice Shardalow and Emilie Jane Sarah.

This is a name which will have family historians scratching their heads in years to come. For the record Sarah is the daughter of David & Jane Thomas whose maiden name was George. Jane’s grandmother was Emma Ann Shardelow, born 18 Aug 1869, Thorpe next Haddiscoe, Norfolk, who married Baron George.

John George, Sarah’s uncle who sent me this news, and his father were both given Shardelow as their second name. The different spelling of the name is interesting because Emma Ann’s sisters insisted that it should be Shardalow. The picture is of Emma and her husband with two of their sons.
