In spite of having just upgraded my Virus Protection program I was recently hit by a virus which it was unable to quarantine or
delete, this proved very difficult to remove and I had to call in professional help to get rid of it. As the result of this I am even more
cautious about opening e-mails if I do not recognize the sender. At one stage I received 46 messages in a period of 48 hours ten
of which were automatically deleted by my security program and the rest I removed as they appeared to be “spam”. It is possible
that this rigorous culling may result in my failing to respond to genuine enquiries, in the past I have suggested including the name
of our interest in the Subject Line but I am no longer confident that this is. sufficient. Reluctantly I would ask anyone contacting me
for the first time to do so by “snail mail”, my address can be found elsewhere on this web page.
The name
As part of the One-name Study I am extracting all references to variations of the name from the Registers of Births, Deaths and
Marriages and I recently came across the registration of the birth of Marcus SHARDOSKY in 1910, I am assuming he would be
the son of an immigrant but until the 1910 Census becomes available I am unable to check this. I am NOT, at present, treating this as a variation of Shard*low.
More on The Name
Cliff Shardalow has sent me a name he found while surfing the net, like the item in SHARDS #30 it is a case of Shardalow being
used as a given name, Graham Shardalow Lee Tucker. He had a research paper on American Fertility Ratios published in 1972
Cliff gave me the address for a UK web page but I have been unable to find anything about Mr. Tucker and, in spite of having a UK address, seems to be mainly American orientated.
The Family History Project
Members living in the UK may know of a competition of this name launched some time ago by a TV production company. This
invited entries of family research which could be made into a TV programe, the winners have now been decided and can be
seen on “The History Channel” ( Sky 561, Telewest 234 and ntl504/13). Not being able to receive any of these channels I have
not seen any of the entries but I would welcome comments from anyone who has. I did not feel able to comply with the
requirements on copyright, confidentiality and documentation so I did not submit an entry. More information can be found on www.thefamilyhistoryproject.co.uk
Shardlow Meeting
Not having heard of anyone intending to come to the FFHS Confrence in August I have not arranged a meeting there but if any
members are thinking of visiting the Derbyshire/ Nottinghamshire area or the Norfolk/Suffolk area at some other time I would be happy to provide details of locations associated with the Shard*low name.
